JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Missouri's governor is putting pressure on lawmakers to pass legislation aimed at the transgender community. With two weeks left in session, Gov. Mike Parson is telling the General Assembly to restrict transgender athletes to play on the team that matches the sex on their birth certificate and ban gender-affirming care for minors or else be prepared to come back to work. "Both of those bills are going to get done," Parson said Thursday. "I firmly believe and if we don't get it done in session, we're going to go right into another session, a special session, to complete both of those."It's been the headline of the legislation and now the governor is telling the General Assembly, it's a top priority that must get done."We just need to get them across the finish line but we're not going to walk away from this building and those are two priorities I think for most people in this state, whether you're a Democrat or Republican."Both chambers have passed th...Mothers failed by the justice system find healing through action

A new word entered the California political lexicon the other day, when two of the five elected supervisors running America’s largest county decided they could greatly reduce crime by depopulating Los Angeles County’s many jails and other penal facilities.Related ArticlesLocal Opinion | Elias: California GOP can expect more irrelevance if it doesn’t change Local Opinion | Elias: Effort to restore single-family zoning in California likely to win Local Opinion | Elias: State of Jefferson plan in California still far from serious The new word: decarceration. This is the process of supposedly fighting crime by letting people out of jails and prisons, a favorite of the far left, the same folks who for several years have advocated defunding police everywhere. That has not happened in California. Apparently decarceration and depopulation of Los Angeles County jails won’t either. They’re starting to line up to run for governor to replace lame duck Gov. Gavin Newsom when his term expires after 2026. Yes, already. The first in line Monday was Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, 57.A few hours later, former state Controller Betty Yee, 65, said she plans to run too. They’re Democrats, of course — the only political type who can be elected governor or U.S. senator in California these days.If Kounalakis, Yee or another woman is elected, she’ll be California’s first female governor. There have been 40 governors over nearly 173 years, and we’ve elected only white males — in this, ironically, the most diverse state in the nation. The next gubernatorial election won’t be held for three years. Why start running now?It lays down a marker and dares rivals to jump in, perhaps before they’re ready. It’s an attempt to announce your presence to voters who have only a vague notion of who you are, if that. And it allows you to start organizing a campaign without being too cute by forming ...With plans for sailing trek to Hawaii, Japanese explorer builds traditional reed boat on Sausalito waterfront

After sealing the surprising victory, Arnaldi raised his arms and thumped his chest, smiling broadly.“Today, I don’t know, maybe the stadium, maybe the pressure on him, but I played the best match of my life,” said Arnaldi, who landed 35 winners and broke Ruud’s serve three times.Ruud, 24, reached the final of both the French Open and U.S. Open last year.
